How to Improve Your Writing

I believe that a person's ability to communicate effectively through writing is important and that we have a responsibility to properly use our language. In my leisure time I enjoy participating in discussions on several Internet bulletin boards. But I noticed frequent communication problems because of my poorly phrased explanations, questions or rebuttals, and that the problem must be corrected. My goal is to improve my writing skill and apply it to all future works, whether big or small.

To realize this goal, I must first learn the basics of English. The rules I must master are the parts of speech, punctuation, types of sentences, and how to employ them correctly. I see those pieces as the building blocks of writing. It will also be necessary to learn what makes a bad sentence and how to avoid overused expressions. To enhance learning the basics, I have made up flashcards for memorization. Furthermore, when reading I can analyze the sentences to identify the elements for further reinforcement.

Concurrent with learning sentence construction, I must practice writing. Before beginning the task, I will need a writing plan and a journal. The plan I will use is the writing process: planning, shaping, drafting, revising, editing and proofreading.

The journal will house my ideas and thoughts, and can help track progress. From there I can refine or redefine the topic. Once the topic is clear, I can begin research. Whether to inform or persuade, research will need to consist of at least 3 sources, and state differing views of the issue to maintain objectivity. Regardless of the purpose of the paper, credibility is key. A paper relying on false data is not worth being written or read.

Learning the fundamentals of grammar and consistent practice will get me to my goal of effective writing. As I continue refinement, I will be able to articulate my writing with clarity, confidence, skill and speed. Encouraging others, no matter how small or passive that is, in the use of proper English will be another fringe benefit. An acquaintance recently pointed out that education is something that no one can ever take from you. I believe by mastering the elements of expression in my native tongue, my educational pursuit will be meaningful and have enough flavor to last a lifetime.
